In the early years of the Christian church we find no less a person than St. Augustine asking, “Did I not live in another body, or somewhere else, before entering my mother’s womb?”
One of the great Christian leaders of the early church was Origin, who once wrote, “Is it not more in conformity with reason that every soul for certain mysterious reasons is introduced into a body according to its deserts and former actions?”
In Matthew 17:10-13, the disciples inquired Jesus as to the meaning of prophecies about the return of Elias. In verses 12-13 Jesus’ answer was, But I tell you Elias has already come and they knew him not but have done unto him whatsoever they listed… The the disciples understood that He spake onto them of John the Baptist.”
